Introduction to Photography

The Introduction to Photography course explores a variety of camera techniques, photographic processes, and post-production workflows that build knowledge and understanding of camera basics, the elements and principles of design, and exploration of ideas. Technological tools, such as Google Drive, Google Sites, and Adobe Spark, will be used to engage in frequent and collaborative feedback and reflection. The class is interspersed with problem-solving assignments, to keep students in a creative thinking mode. Portraiture, still life, narratives, landscapes, and socially motivated themes will be explored throughout the year. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom, are computer programs that will be used to store and edit photographs. A workflow that addresses the quality of the image and a series of basic Photoshop manipulations will take place throughout the Introduction to Photography course. Visual Literacy is an ongoing component of the class in which an understanding of how to describe in writing and speak about photographic imagery is essential The course will cultivate an awareness of multicultural, contemporary, and historical photographers and place photography in a larger context, by addressing its history.
